Other Projects | Britten Project

The Britten Project is the Chorale's five season exploration of one of the greatest composers to set the English language to music. We will present favorites like A Ceremony of Carols and Rejoice in the Lamb along with lesser known works such as Christ's Nativity and Sacred and Profane.

This unique venture will culminate in a concert devoted to music inspired by its patron saint, Cecilia. Britten was born on November 22, St Cecilia's name-day, and we will honor his Centennial in 2013 and celebrate our own 30th Anniversary.

W.H. Auden's poem "Hymn to St Cecilia" inspired one of Britten's greatest choral works, and features this refrain:

Blessed Cecilia, appear in visions
To all musicians, appear and inspire.
Translated daughter, come down and startle
Composing mortals with immortal fire.

We hope the innovative programming of our Britten Project will inspire as each installation appears.
