Music Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

I. ARTISTIC DUTIES

• Serve as conductor for all Virginia Chorale programs including rehearsals and performances. • Oversee and further develop education and outreach programs. • Plan musical content for all Chorale performances (subscription and special programs) that challenges and inspires performers while satisfying the needs of the community. • Provide artistic budget for all programs to Executive Director. • Coordinate production needs with staff such as music, instrumentalist and guest soloist requirements and production details. • Evaluate current singer roster and identify future needs and conduct auditions, as needed. • Prepare and present concert lectures. • Prepare and coach ensemble, soloists, and accompanists. • Provide program notes and other artistic material for program book, grants, etc. • Assist Executive Director with identification and engagement of performance venues. • Collaborate with Executive Director in planning and executing special projects and programs including run-out performances, programs with other arts organizations, and recording projects. • Conduct long-range performance planning with Executive Director.

II. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

• Prepare and present to Board of Directors an annual artistic budget for all performances and programs with the assistance of the Executive Director. • Assist Executive Director with scheduling of subscription series, special programs and rehearsals. • Participate in development activities, such as fundraising calls and event planning. • Attend staff and board meetings. • Serve as a public spokesman for the Virginia Chorale to the media and grant-making organizations. • Represent the Chorale at various arts gatherings and public events. • Assist Executive Director and staff with preparation of newsletters, news releases, programs, marketing materials and grants. • Research and write program notes for program books and other projects. • Research and provide text translations for concerts.

III. EDUCATIONAL DUTIES

• Plan, lead and conduct Young Singers Project (YSP) and other education programs such as workshops, summer camps, and master classes. • Lead selection process for YSP participants (audition and selection). • Identify accompanists and guest performers, as needed. • Assist Chorus Manager with engagement of accompanists and guest performers. • Coordinate performance and rehearsal scheduling with Education Chair. • Assist Education Chairman and Executive Director with identification and engagement of venues. • Provide education program needs to Executive Director to allow for adequate funding and support.

Requirements:

MM in Music or the equivalent in experience with recognized artistry and superior skills in choral conducting, with appropriate breadth and knowledge of repertoire; Exhibit a commanding presence that garners the respect and trust of musicians; Proven record of success in audience relations, ensemble development and innovative programming; Possess uncompromising musical standards that will result in the Chorale’s optimal performances; Serve as an effective communicator of musical vision, both for the ensemble and for the organization as a whole; Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; Possess desire and drive to be visionary, and the desire to make the Virginia Chorale your top professional priority.

Organization Description:

Now in its 24th season, the Virginia Chorale is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s only fully professional choral ensemble. Founded as an early music ensemble in 1984, the Chorale has expanded its repertoire to include music from all periods of history, and is particularly well known for performance of a cappella repertoire, which is a feature on all concert programs. The Virginia Chorale also provides education programs to the community including the Young Singers Project, master classes, and summer workshops for area students.
